What this page is for
Every fixed piece of wording in the system can be changed here: menu names, page titles, buttons, field labels, hints, messages, and the words on the sign-in page. Use it to match the words your team already uses (for example "Units" instead of "Properties"), or to fit your tone of voice.
Your wording replaces the original for everyone in your organisation. The original is always kept, so you can go back to it at any time.
Who can use it
People with the Change site text permission (by default Admin) and the account owner.
How to change a piece of text
- Find the text:
- pick an area on the left (for example Menu or Settings), or
- type a word you see on the page into Search all text and select Search.
- Change the wording in the box.
- Select Save at the bottom. The change shows straight away.
How to go back to the original wording
- Find the text. Changed text has a Changed badge and shows the original under the box.
- Select Use the original next to it.
You can also clear the box, or type the original wording back, and save.
How to see everything you have changed
Tick Only text I have changed and select Search.
How to export and import text (for translators)
- Select Export JSON or Export CSV. The file lists every key with its current wording.
- Edit the file. In the CSV, change the your_text column only.
- Select Import, choose the file and confirm.
Keys that don't exist are ignored. Text equal to the original is reset to the original.
Fields and columns
| Item | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Area list | Groups of text by part of the system, with how many pieces of text each has, and a badge for how many you changed |
| Key | The internal name of the text, such as settings.general.title. The first part is the area, the second the page. |
| Text box | The wording people see. Starts with the original. |
| Changed badge | You have your own wording for this text |
| Original | The shipped wording, shown under changed text |
Placeholders
Some text contains words that start with a colon, such as :name or :count. The system fills these in with real values (a person's name, a number). Keep them exactly as they are, but you can move them within the sentence.
Statuses and automation
- Every change is recorded in the Change history.
- After every save, a copy of all your wording is kept on the server, so nothing is lost.
- Long dashes are replaced with a hyphen or a comma when you save (house style).
- You are editing your organisation's default language. More languages arrive with translation packs.
Settings that change this page
- The language you edit is your organisation's default language, set in Settings.
- Product name and tagline are set under Branding, not here.
- Email and message wording is set under Message templates.
FAQs
Will an update overwrite my wording? No. Your wording is stored separately. If an update changes the original, your own wording still wins.
Why can't I find some text? Names you type in yourself (such as role names or property names) are edited where you created them. Emails are under Message templates.
Only 150 pieces of text show. Search or pick an area to narrow the list.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | What to do |
|---|---|
| A name or number is missing from my new text | Put the :placeholder back, exactly as it appears in the original. |
| The import changed nothing | Check the file has the key and your_text columns (CSV), or is a JSON object of key and text. |
| "The text is too long" | Keep each piece of text under 5,000 characters. |
| My change doesn't show | Reload the page. Check you edited the right key by searching for the original wording. |
